If you are a candle maker and want to sell your candles you will need to know how much they actually cost you to make.
Basically you will need to figure out all of your individual costs of your candle making supplies per candle and add them together. Don't forget about shipping. And you should also remember the employee cost. Time is money and you should include paying either yourself or an employee to make the candles.
Fragrance and wax the two largest cost components to a candle. Wax cost is pretty easy to calculate.
x = Pounds of wax * cost per pound
Cost of wax = x
Shipping = y
Lets say you order 50 pounds of wax at $1.50 per pound. x is (50 * $1.50) = $75) and shipping is $25. Total cost is $100 for the case of wax.
Price per pound is ( x + y)/x = TRUE cost per pound of wax.
In our example it is $2.00 per pound. [(50 * $1.50) + $25]/ (50 *$1.50) = $2.00 per pound = z
What if your candle is not a pound exactly? Lets say your candle is 4 ounces of wax. Your calculation would continue as
z = $2.00 per pound
a = amount of wax used per candle in decimal form. 4oz = .25 of a pound Take the number of ounces and divide by 16.
If you have a 1 pound 6oz candle it would be 22oz. Then divide by 16 (number of ounces in a pound). You get 1.375. That would be your a.
z * a = wax cost per candle
$2*.1.375=$2.75 per 22oz candle for the cost of wax.
Fragrance oil calculation is a bit more involved and takes some other factors into consideration. Not to mention that the cost changes with each candle. I have created this handy fragrance oil calculator. Simply plug in your individual costs and you will be able to calculate the cost for each candle! It is an excel download FRAGRANCE OIL CALCULATOR
