Wood Wicks and What I Have Learned so Far.
Posted by Lyschel Bersch on
I have been a hold out against wooden wicks. I liked the fun little crackle and pops but not the big embers breaking off, the strange hissing sound and the inability to relight after the first use. Not to mention that many wooden wicks are very inconsistent which made it impossible to wick a candle correctly.
Enter-Ultimate Wooden Wick from Unity. These little beauties look like nothing I have ever seen before. Kinda like an emery board on steroids. They look really cool!
Now the candle making. You have to make sure that you pour your candles warm enough as the wood absorbs the hot wax. Kinda like priming for regular cotton wick. I just hope that wood wicks don't get the same air pockets that cotton wicks can get. It also looks like the wick is "Pre-treated" with something very oily. Apparently it is a natural substance to help the burn.
Testing time!!! Ok, got the candles lit. The wicks state that they self trim. I tested this by giving them an extra inch of wood to work with and was very pleased that they burned it off without a huge flame and are now doing nicely! Full melt pool in a 2-3/4" tin using a med ultimate wick in 1.5 hours using my hardest to wick scent Lovely Lilac.
Drawback. Giving a very smoky scent. Will have to be careful with the scents I use.
Home test with Lovely Lilac--Left candle burning at home with hubby. Walked back in an hour later to a house filled with the most beautiful lilac smell and very little wood smell!!!! Needless to say I am overjoyed!!!! For the next tests we will need to see if the other scents can use the same wooden wick for their size! It would be really great to have specific sized wicks work in specific sized containers with any scent!!! Right now that isn't possible with regular wicks. Keeping fingers crossed and will let you know more as we go.
Update 9/10/16-The Med Wooden Wick worked great in a 3" diameter glass container! We then tested the Winter Woodlands Whisper with the Med Wooden Wick and it would not light a few times. After a few tries it finally stayed lit but struggled. We are retesting it with a Large Wooden Wick to see what we get.

UPDATE 3/10/17
Unfortunately these great wicks are not being made any longer. We will have to search again to find wooden wicks that we like. Apparently there is now only one wooden wick manufacturer. They have a new wick and we are waiting on our samples to see how they do.
