Making the Candy Shoppe Soda Soap Pops! (The Road to Soap Making Part 6)

Making the Candy Shoppe Soda Soap Pops! (The Road to Soap Making Part 6)

I wanted to tear open the box the minute I got these soda soap pops in the store.  They looked cool in the online picture but were almost irresistible when I got the kit into the store.  But I had other things that needed to be done so I put them aside.  Not so for my 10 year old.  I told her she could do any project she wanted as long as I didn't have to help her so I could get other work done.   She had a friend over and they chose the Soda Pops.  I tried to negotiate with her for another project because they looked way too hard and I thought I would have to help them a lot.  As I mentioned I had a lot of other work to do.  Well, like usual I gave in and let them at it.  I figured what was the worst that cold happen.  Soap all over the place, colors wrong, etc.  Well I didn't have to worry!  The instructions were pretty easy to follow it just took a lot longer (about 4 hours) than the instructions suggested.  The pops are even cuter in person!  And the girls had, and I quote, "The BEST time ever!"

So, I want to share their experience with you.
First the given instructions-I apologize for the extra dots and numbers.  I just copied this from the website and can't get rid of them easily.  I will give our thoughts and pictures within the directions (in green).

  • Recipe Directions
    1. NOTE: If you are making these products for sale, good manufacturing practices recommend you wear a hairnet, gloves and a mask. We also recommend a clean apron.
    2.  To make Soap Swirls:
    3. In 4 plastic beakers, pour 1 oz. of glycerin in each. Add 1/4 tsp. of each powder dye.
    4. Blend dry powder into glycerin by hand (with Popsicle stick or toothpick) and then use mini-mixer to blend powder thoroughly into glycerin. Set colors aside. (If you don't blend by hand first the powder will shoot everywhere!)
    1. Using white soap, weigh 2 oz. and place in glass measuring cup. (1/4th of 1 block of soap.)  Heat in microwave until melted. (Didn't get a picture of the white melted or cutting the soap.  Cutting can be a bit difficult for younger kids but these two had no problem)
    2. Place loaf mold on cookie sheet for stability.
    3. Add yellow glycerin mixture to soap and mix well. (Didn't get a picture for each color but I think you can get the picture from this one)
    4.
    5.
    6. Pour into bottom of loaf mold and spritz with alcohol.
    1. When soap has hardened, melt another 2 oz. of white soap. Add purple glycerin mixture until desired shade is achieved.
    2. Spritz yellow soap well with alcohol. (Spritz well means WELL) Be sure soap temperature is at or below 125° F. Pour purple over yellow layer. Spritz again. Let harden.  (Mix and pour purple like above)
    1. add color. Add 1 Tablespoon of glycerin to keep layer supple.
    2. Mixing color into melt and pour soap with a mini mixer
      1. Spritz purple layer generously with alcohol. Pour white over purple layer when temperature is at 125° F. Spritz again.
      2. Follow above steps with green and pink colors. Be sure to spritz well between each layer.
      3. When soap has completely hardened, carefully remove from mold.
      4. With a soap cutter, slice very thin layers of the soap. (The thinner the better for making the cork screws.  Don't try to evenly cut 36.  You will get a LOT of extras and can make more than 6 bars.  I think we made 12 bars.  We ended up chopping up some of the curls that broke and the bars still look pretty cool.  You will want to get extra craft sticks)
      5. Taking one slice, wrap around a pencil to create a corkscrew.  Continue until you have 36 corkscrews. We filled each cavity with 6 corkscrews.
      6. Place soap pop mold on cookie sheet for stability. Place 3 corkscrews into bottom of first cavity using a pencil to position them.
      7. Then, put a second layer of corkscrews on top of the first. Continue until all cavities are filled.
      8. Remove entire 2 lb. of clear soap from plastic tray and cut off 3 of the 4 rectangles (1-1/2 lbs) of soap. Cut up into 1-2" cubes and place in large glass measuring cup. (We ended up having a lot left over that we used for more pops)
      9. Heat soap in microwave until melted. Remove and stir to dissolve any slivers of soap that remain.
      10. In plastic beaker, pour 1 oz. of fragrance oil. Since this fragrance has 5% vanilla content, you will need to add .5 oz. of Vanilla Color Stabilizer to fragrance. Mix well and let sit for 2 minutes.
      11. To the clear melted soap, add fragrance oil mixture and mix well.
      12. Spritz soap (curls) inside of each cavity before pouring clear soap.
      13. Carefully pour soap into each cavity. Be sure to pour around each soap curl so they are completely surrounded with clear soap. You can use a pencil to gently move curls away from sides so the soap completely surrounds the sides. Spritz tops with alcohol when finished. (We also gently pounded the mold on the table to release trapped air)
      14. Place top of soap pop mold over soaps and insert sticks.
      15. To unmold: Gently pull sides away from soap. From the bottom, gently push
      16. on soap. You will see the silicone start to release from soap. DO NOT
      17. PULL ON STICK. Continue to gently push until you can grab the soap to pull it all the way out of mold. Unmolding will take some time and patience.  (They are NOT joking!  This was the hardest part.  I ended up pushing down firmly on one pop while one of the girls helped push up from the bottom and the other girl pulled out the pop.  Confession-we did pull on the stick and luckily it stayed in.  Once some of the pop started sliding out we pulled on the pop.  You have to be careful not to put your nails in the pop)
    1. After unmolding, place in cello bag and attach twist ties.
    2. Label accordingly.

  • The girls did an incredible job!!!  Good job Ava and Tehya!  And glad you had so much fun!  (Giggles, oh the giggles!)

One last note.--I LOVE the color of these!  I thought the colors on the box were fun but these are SO much prettier to me :)

We don't sell the kit anymore but they are easy enough to make by ordering a few pounds of melt and pour and a few colors.

And would you be so kind as to give us a thumbs up!  Thanks!
