Sensitive to Scent? Feel like Candle Scents Make you Sick?

Posted by Lyschel Bersch on

If you feel like scented candles make you sick, you are not alone.  In our store we initially get in a lot of people who want no scent or low scent candles because they feel that they are allergic scents.  What we have found is that this is usually not the case with our scents.  The issue that most people experience when they react to burning candles is usually not the scent itself but the solvent which is used to increase the effect of the scent.

There are a lot of different types of solvents in the world.  Some solvents are even natural.  Water is a solvent, but it is not used in candle making :)  Unfortunately most of the solvents used in candle making are more irritating then water.  Minimal solvents in candle scent are necessary so that the scent will release more easily from the candle.  But in many cases excessive solvents are used cut the actual scent (raw fragrance materials) in order to bring down costs.

Again, most raw scent materials are very expensive so many manufacturers work to cut those costs by adding fillers (solvents).  For instance, an ounce of lavender oil may be hundreds of dollars per ounce.  But many solvents can be produced for a fraction of the cost of raw fragrance materials.  And when you add 15 ounces of solvent to an ounce of lavender oil you have drastically reduced your fragrance oil price.

Most people with chemical sensitivities are actually reacting to the solvent and not the scent.   Burning high quality candles makes it possible for many people to still enjoy the fragrances that they love.  Our scents are developed to be the best quality possible so that automatically means that we use as little solvent as possible.  And that makes it possible for many more people to enjoy beautiful scent creations.  In fact, we even have many candle makers who are very sensitive to "scent" that can only make candles using our products.  And when your head is directly over a hot pot of scented wax there is a lot hitting you all at once!
