The Importance of Getting Scent Samples for Candles Into Wax

Don't judge Candle Cocoon's scents in the bottle. Get them in the finished product! |
Sniffing has it's place. Flowers, gas leaks or even stinky socks, these are all things that should be sniffed. I would say to sniff some with extreme caution. And while I understand the desire to sniff new candle making fragrance oils in the bottle I hope that judgement can be reserved until the oil is actually incorporated in the wax (or diffuser or bath and body). The reason for this is because fragrance oils should be much more concentrated in the bottle so that when they are diluted with the end product (wax, soap, diffuser oil, lotion base) they will be strong enough and in the correct concentration to smell good. I know that I have many times been fooled by scents that smell great in the bottle but end up giving no scent throw in the wax at even an ounce per pound. I have also pleasantly surprised when something is off or a bit stinky in the bottle and turns out incredible in the wax. I have to say that most of my fragrance oils fall into this category. Take the Raspberry Cordial for example. In the bottle it has a very strange twang but in the wax (used at the correct amount) it is just fabucanlous! If you use too much of this oil in the wax it is still a bit stinky. Only .6oz per pound in most soy waxes gives an incredible, mouth watering luscious raspberry liquor!
Candy Corn by Candle Cocoon - Stinky in the bottle but incredible in the wax! |
The Candy Corn is another example that is horrid in the bottle. It smells like nail polish remover in the bottle, but in the wax it is the truest candy corn you can imagine. You would NEVER guess that from the bottle. Even the Vanilla Voodoo which is our best seller is a bit "off" in the bottle. But in the candle! Wonderful! Rich, creamy with just a touch of something special (secret ingredient). I could go on and on about each one of our scents because most of them have a story that unfolds beautifully in the wax.
Some scents smell great in the bottle and in the candle. |
Of course we do have some scents that smell great in the bottle right away. The Tiger Lily and Cantaloupe does smell good in the bottle but even it morphs in the wax. The blend is more refined in the wax. In the bottle it seems like you smell separate sweet and green-floral. And in the wax there is a beautiful breathtaking balance.
And then there is the Ooey Gooey Caramel Goodness. It smells like nothing in the bottle. It is the strangest thing to me because the power of this scent in the candle at only .6oz per pound wax is just incredible. I would guess that I am standing in a vat of rich caramel. The Lovely Lilac is the same to some extent. It is so strong in the bottle that I think it shuts down my brain. I just can't smell it in the bottle. But in the wax!!! Oh boy! It is the prettiest lilac ever!
So, I know I can't stop anyone from sniffing their new oils but I do hope that I have persuaded you to hold judgement until they are in the wax :)
