Glass and candle making--heat resistant is best.
Posted by Lyschel Bersch on
Glassware is one of the most used mediums for container candles. Glass is easy to find and use in candle making. Beer and wine bottles have become popular to use as recycled candles. I would advise candle makers to shy away from these projects for safety and liability reasons. While all glass can break under high heat situations heat resistant tempered glass is made to better withstand the stress. From what I understand beer and wine bottles are not made from heat resistant tempered glass and will not withstand a quick change in temperature. They may be pretty but they...

WHY CAN’T I SMELL THIS SCENT? Why can't I smell my candle scent? Lyschel Bersch Owner, Candle Cocoon llc Many of you order new scents for candle making and love them in the bottle. But then you get them in the wax and can’t smell them. I am going to go through a checklist of reasons that may be affecting your ability to smell your scents.  First of all, did you follow the directions? If a scent says it needs 1.5 oz per pound to get a scent throw then it will probably need that amount. If it only...
That Darn Cling! Fragrance Oil that Stays in the Bottle can Really Affect your Candle Testing!

Cling! Bottle Cling. Much like static cling. This is what I call the minute about of scent oil that stays in the bottle no matter how long you hold it upside down. It really isn't a large amount of scent and overall is not really a big deal especially with larger bottles of oil. With larger bottles there is a smaller bottle to oil ratio so the ratio of lost oil is smaller. But when, lets say, there is only a .5 oz (1/2oz) of oil the amount that stays in the bottle is a much higher ratio. That combined...
Which soots more? Soy or Paraffin?

Over-wicked sooty soy candle Candle Testing--One scent with different wicks As many of you know there is a huge debate over which type of candle soots more? Many people accuse paraffin of being the super sooting culprit. In fact, I have even seen some candle makers do tests to try and prove that paraffin soots more. The problem with one of the tests in particular that I have seen is that the candle maker was trying to hold all variables (wax, fragrance used, container size and wick) of the candle constant. They used the same wick, dye and scent to...
Test Burning for Dragon's Blood. How a New Candle Scent Came into Being.
Posted by Lyschel Bersch on
Dragon's Blood is a wonderful incense smell that I want in my candles I am going to add a Dragon's Blood scent to my line because it is one of my most asked for scents. I have smelled it a few times in passing at the local New Age store and to be honest it was not a first time favorite with me. Unfortunately the test burning of the first 12 samples has reinforced this feeling. I felt that I was missing something so did some research and found that there are a few different plant resins that are called...
